There is a big problem that many people suffer from I like to call it simply “negative self talk.”
You know… “They didn’t invite you because they don’t like you” and even worse yet, that little voice of condemnation that capitalizes on any sliver of guilt that you may be carrying.
You probably know the one. That voice that replays the negative things that we’ve done or experienced. Sometimes endlessly.
A friend of mine has affectionately labeled mine as “the voice of untruth.”
It is the voice that reminds you every time you are making progress “you don’t deserve this” or “all you do is….(fill in all your mistakes, past sins here).
You see the enemy doesn’t come at you dressed in a red suit with horns and a pitchfork. He has an agenda and thousands of years of practice honing his skills. The enemy’s mission is to distract, derail and dissapoint.
His first mission is to distract us from our God given ministry. You see if we don’t fulfill God’s will for our life that’s a major win for him.
Secondly, he wants to derail us by plucking our heartstrings. Like when we get emotional about a situation. Or when he vibrates that heartstring that is a little bit out of tune, and gets us to think about something that is usually just slightly wrong, just so we can start justifying getting into the situation.
Tim Keller has a sermon on Spiritual warfare addressing this same issue. When a person comes to tune your piano he taps a pitchfork and it vibrates the string on the piano that is out of tune.
Satan does the same thing with our sin. When he attacks he knows which of our internal strings are out of tune. Instead of making us do something (he’s not that powerful) he vibrates his fork and we REACT.
We get emotional, we get angry, we judge, we gossip, we sin!
"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Lastly, he uses disappointment. You know the feeling. That feeling when all your friends go out and don’t invite you. Or when people don’t do something you expect…
I know I have experienced it. In short disappointments are just unmet expectations.
So what is the solution to all this negativity?
First, recognize the voice for who it is.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.” (John 10:27 NIV)
The sheep know the shepherds voice because from the moment of their birth He speaks to them. Compare it to being in a crowd and hearing your child call for you. You instantly know their voice.
When you get in the Word daily (The Bible) you will begin the process of learning to recognize God’s voice. That’s how you learn to discern the Voice of Truth from the lies of this world and of the enemy.
Lastly in all situations PRAY!
