Chum

You therefore have no excuse, you who pass judgment on another. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. (Romans 2:1)

July is one of my favorite summer months. I sit for endless hours on the beach, warming my toes in the sand, and I tune in to one of my favorite things on television. Shark Week.

Growing up near the ocean gave me a natural fascination for its inhabitants. My grandfather and I would walk along the beach picking up seashells while I asked him endless questions about this or that. I also grew up near the place where the first major movie about sharks was filmed. Martha's Vineyard on Cape Cod. I remember my mom and dad going out on a date to the movies to watch Jaws when it was first released. My mom returned home scared out of her wits that evening.

Sharks have an uncanny ability to be able to smell blood in water. Their olfactory systems are more than 100 times more acute than ours. One method some use to attract sharks is called "chumming." You may have seen this on a movie or a television special. They throw fish parts, bone and blood in the water to attract these predators so they can catch them to do research.

Critical spirits like chum as well!

Critical or judgemental spirits attach themselves to believers causing them to look out for blood in the water. These spirits cause us to look at others and instead of seeing the good, we nitpick, looking for that "one" spot in their character, dress or behavior, and like sharks hone in and attack.

Oftentimes joy is found in the discovery of others flaws, which left unchecked can lead to gloating.

"Look at THAT preacher! He finally got what he deserved! Flying around in that million dollar aircraft and such!"

God however, wants us to stay focused on Him and our spiritual walks. He wants us to extend His grace, and forgiveness, just like He extends it to us on a daily basis. We are to be His conduit for grace and mercy here on earth and let Him be GOD.

Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? (Luke 6:41)

Are you looking at others with condemnation? Are you scrutinizing every last speck on your brother, sister, leader or pastor?

It's high time for us to love others where they are, extend God's grace, and walk alongside our brothers and sisters. Just like God does with us.
